MacArthur Park

//MacArthur Park//

MacArthur Park is a park in western Los Angeles, California, named after General Douglas MacArthur. In the mid-1800s the area was a swampland; by the 1890s, it was a vacation destination, surrounded by wealthy hotels.

But it became known for being a violent place after 1985 when drug-dealing, shoot-outs and rumored occasional drownings became somewhat common.

Most recently, in 2005 the park was celebrated for having the highest reduction of crime statistics per resident in the United States.

MacArthur Park is also a song written by Jimmy Webb. It is first performed by Richard Harris in 1968, it topped the charts in Europe at that time, and peaked at 2nd on the US charts.

Donna Summer did a disco rendition of this song in 1978, which topped the US charts.

A poll by American columnist Dave Barry selected "MacArthur Park" as the worst song ever recorded.

I don't really think it is the worst song ever, there are a lot lousier song around now, but the lyrics of this song is pretty amusing I would say. This is the chorus:

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

Does it make any sense? A cake left out in the rain? I can't take it cause it take so long to bake it? I'll never have the receipe again? And worst, how does MacArthur Park melting in the rain gotta do with a cake?

There are a couple of theories as to what the song lyrics means...some are pretty amusing too..

In 5th place

Richard Harris is there, all day long, sitting by himself, remembering his lost love and the things they use to do in the park.
  • "All the sweet, green icing flowing down" - are the green leaves on the trees flowing together as he watches them through the tears.
  • "Someone left the cake out in the rain" - he's not sure who broke up the relationship.
  • "I don't think I can take it 'cause it took so long to bake it. And I'll never have that recipe again" - He's not sure if he can continue after all the time spent building that relationship and he's sure he can't recreate that relationship again because she's gone.
    • This theory actually makes some sense, but too bad it is not funny enough...

      In 4th place

It is a song about a failing marriage, they will never be able to save their marriage, with reference to "Someone left the cake out in the rain, I don't think I can take it, cause it took so long to bake it", which the cake refers to the relationship. This theory actually makes sense too, but what about the first line "MacArthur Park is melting in the dark"?

      In 3rd place

The song is about sex and drug!! (with humour injected).

For the drug aspect, "MacArthur Park is melting in the dark" refers to Jimmy Webb experimenting with LSD.

As for the sexual reference, Jimmy Webb actually had a sexual encounter with a girl in the park (sort of like ONS)..."Someone left the cake out in the rain" is actually the girl's description of the oral sex committed on her by Jimmy Webb (her first time), "I don't think I can take it, cause it took so long to bake it, I will never have that receipe again" is the from the girl's perspective, whether she would meet a guy prepared to do that again to her, and whether or not she would achieve the same orgasm.

      -_-?

Well regardless of whether this is true, both Richard Harris and Donna Summer have mentioned in interviews that the song is about drug taking.

But sources can be unreliable, after cross referencing with other sources, which obviously disagreed with this one, I declare that this source is highly unreliable, and whether or not Richard Harris or Donna Summer said that remains doubtful.

      In 2nd place

This song is about the Vietnam War! This song is written in 1967, when the Vietnam war is ongoing. The park is named after General Douglas MacArthur since WWII. Connect the dots. But what about the cake! Dude you forgot the cake!

      In 1st place

Richard Harris made a bet with someone saying that music is more important than lyrics, the other guy don't think so, he believed that a song is made with lyrics, so Richard Harris wrote this song, about a cake melting in the rain, and it did top the charts! So Richard Harris won the bet! LOL!

But then this song wasn't exactly written by Richard Harris? But other than that, this theory is acutally possible.

Personally, I think that the song could be about exams! "MacArthur Park is melting in the dark, all the sweet green icing flowing down" refers to you crying after you receive your paper. "Someone left the cake out in the rain, I don't think that I can take it, cause it took so long to bake it" refers to you being careless (leaving the cake out in the rain), you can't take it cause you spend so much time and effort revising (took so long to bake it)..."and I'll never have that receipe again" refers to after this major failure I will never take this subject again!

Nevermind, that is so not funny...

On a side note, in 9 hours time, I will be receiving my Bio paper, followed by Maths, and Physics...wish me luck!
